 Taxis
Taxis are available throughout major cities and important towns around Ecuador. There are two types of cabs: yellow and private “executive”. Yellow taxis start on a $0.35 meter basis, and have a minimum fare of $1 USD on the mornings. Airport, hotel and other dedicated cab companies do not use a meter but use mainly pre-arranged fares, which of course is more expensive. At night, the minimum fare is $1.50 USD and no meter is used. Expect a 50% increment on the regular morning fare.
Executive cabs are more secure, reliable but more expensive. These are ordered by phone and are regular cars not painted yellow. Some companies even offer GPS on their units, and their cabs also run by meter, but a more expensive one. Since the regulation of this service in this year, they can also operate on a street passenger pick-up basis, but this is not recommended as you have no way to know whether they are legal cabs or not.
This cabs have an approximate 30% extra charge than normal ones. We recommend TAXI AMIGO 222-2220 in Quito.
Be wary of “clever” cab drivers. Always ask for the meter when taking them in the morning, and be sure to pre-arrange your fare at night. Women travelers are advised to call phone cab companies when at night. | |
