Overview
Quito, officially known as San Francisco de Quito is Ecuador’s capital. The vibrant city takes its name from the Quitu tribe that occupied these lands. It was founded in 1534 on the ruins of an ancient Inca city. In 1809, Quito’s first revolution begins, leading to its independence. The city was declared a Unesco World heritage site in 1978, since then building in the old town has been strictly controlled. Today, more than two million people live in Quito.
The city is located at the northern highland about 2850m (9350ft) above sea level in the Guayllabamba river basin , it is the only capital in the world where people live near an active volcano, the Guagua Pichincha. Quito is flanked by snowcapped volcanic peaks; some of these volcanoes are the Cotopaxi, Sincholagua, Antinsana, Cayambe and others.
