Machalilla Machalilla Info
The Machalilla National park comprises an area of approximately 56000 ha. It is one of the archeological treasures of Ecuador. The Machalilla culture can be remounted back to the years 3000b.C. and during the years 1500 b.C to 1300 b.C this part was a central area for fishing and commercial interchange with other villages.

But it is not only the archeological value of this park that makes it so important. There is an incredible variety of ecological activities and sights to explore. The Machalilla National park holds a very important dry forest, where scientists have found up to a 20% of endemic species. The San Sebastian trail by horse through the cloud forest, and the incredible beaches of Los Frailes, Tortuguita and other amazing spots make this location a must go.

It was once called “little Galapagos” due to its fauna, similar to the one in the Archipelago. One can find blue feet boobies, frigates and pelicans in the region. In the Isla de la Plata, besides the land species variety there is an incredible marine ecosystem, full of coral reefs and marine life. During June to October humpback whales choose this area as their breeding grounds, as water conditions are perfect for it during that time of the year here.

Puerto Lopez is a small fishermen village that has developed strongly in the past years. It is still a quiet little town, where people enjoy sitting outside just to talk and catch up. Nevertheless, it holds an incredible variety of touristic services for every need.
