This tour is one of the most exotic and fascinating. We will start the day travelling by plane or by bus towards El Coca. Soon after our arrival, we will navigate on the river in a “ranchera” up to one of the world’s most renowned lodges, Yachana Lodge. It is known worldwide for their outstanding geotouristic commitment and quality. As we arrive we will admire an impressive Amazon jungle sunset. Afterwards we will return to the lodge to rest.
Our second day is a day of exploration and learning. We will hike through the jungle learning the medicinal power of plants, we will visit the mariposario (butterfly farm) and a shaman will give us a demonstration on the traditional ceremony of cleansing the spirit. We will also try out our skills in the use of traditional hunting tools like the blowgun or the spear. As night falls, we will hike through the jungle again with our guides to discover new animals, reptiles and insects that only come out when it is dark.
On the third day, early in the morning, we will go bird watching upriver and afterwards we will visit a lake that is known for being home of the Hoatzín, an endemic species of bird that has a prehistoric appearance. We will visit the technical high school of Yachana, were we will share a nice time with the students. Later that day, native chefs will teach us how to prepare Amazonian delights with ingredients from the jungle. After enjoying a nice lunch, served on banana tree leaves, followed by an Amazonian dessert, we will learn from an indigenous woman from the community to make “mokawa”, an ancient tradition of making ceramics. We will then learn to weave traditional baskets using natural fibers picked from the jungle. Finally, we will watch an amazing sunset before dinner and a beautiful sky full of stars afterwards.
On the fourth day, passengers that chose the four day tour will return to Quito. The rest of us will visit a protected reserve of primary and secondary forest. We will watch birds, insects and animals under the guidance of a naturist guide. In the afternoon we will visit a family that work as gold searchers in the river, to continue we will go downriver and appreciate the sounds of the jungle. On the fifth day, after enjoying a nice breakfast we depart to port, and to Quito.
