Coast
In the coastal regions, traditional dishes mainly contain seafood. Served both hot and cold, you will find that the flavour is extraordinary.
Provinces like Manabí are known for their cooking and should not be missed. Here are some dishes:
Ceviche
Roughly translated as a cocktail. It can be made of shellfish, shrimp, fish, crab and oyster. Ceviches are made with blended tomatoes, lemon juice, orange juice, ketchup, mustard and several other ingredients that give it its unique taste. Ecuadorians always have their ceviches with a cold beer.
Bolón de verde
It’s a crushed plantain ball, usually filled with cheese. Most of the time it’s served with some hot sauce (Ají) and a cup of coffee.
Camarones (Shrimp)
Considering that shrimp is one of Ecuador prime export products, it’s no wonder that there are so many dishes including it. Usually served breaded, garlicky or with coconut sauce, you will find that they are delicious anywhere you go.
Conchas asadas (Shellfish)
Specially baked shellfish. They’re more common in the Manabí region. They are said to have aphrodisiac properties. A must try.
Cangrejo (Crab)
Mangrove crab. This delight is usually a bit expensive. ($20 USD for 12 crabs). But it’s certainly one of our favorites. Try cangrejo criollo in Guayas or cangrejo al ajillo (garlic crab) in the Quito.
Pescado frito con menestra (Fried Fish)
Rice in the coastal regions tastes and cooks different than in the highlands, giving it an incredible taste and volume. Although this dish may not be too complex (Fried fish, rice, beans and salad), it is definitely worth a try because of its incredible taste and nutrition value. You won’t be hungry for almost a day after eating this.
