Drinks
There are two things that you should definitely try when in Ecuador juices and “batidos”(shakes). Because of the freshness of the fruit, anything made with it is just boasting with flavour. Juices are sold almost everywhere; you can even find some places that sell nutritional vegetable and fruit juices. Shakes are sold mostly on the coastal region and might be a little hard to find on the highlands, but there is nothing like refreshing coconut shake on the seaside.
The traditional indigenous drink is “Chicha”, which is made out of fermented sugar cane. Chicha is made by elderly women in tribes; they chewed up sugar cane and spit it into a bucket. After fermenting for a while, you have Chicha. This is not how it is done anymore, although you might find that some tribes still practice this tradition.
Water -- Do not drink the tap water in Ecuador, even in the cities, as disease-causing organisms are endemic. Always ask for a bottle of spring water or purified water to take with you or you can buy one almost anywhere. Always ask if the water the juice is made from is not tap, but bottled. | |
